R-744 and Hydrocarbons Compression: automotive technology applied in refrigeration systems
R-744 and hydrocarbons are mainstream refrigerants with higher COP and lower GWP than synthetics, reducing cost and emissions. They require dedicated compressor design due to thermodynamics. We present R-744 transcritical and HT HC compressors for industrial refrigeration and heat pumps; case studies.

Session description
R-744 (Carbon dioxide, CO2) and Hydrocarbons have nowadays become the mainstream solutions for many applications, often granting better COP levels than the previously adopted technologies based on synthetic refrigerants: this trend is progressively leading to both a lower usage of high-GWP refrigerants and a sensible operational costs reduction for several industrial sectors.
However, specific components and appropriate system design are mandatory when approaching these technologies, due to the unique thermodynamic characteristics of these refrigerants. In particular, R-744 transcritical compressors and Hydrocarbons compressors have to be engineered on purpose with a “from scratch” approach, this ending up in the introduction o ...
