Description

Why are buildings important in terms of sustainability?

Buildings represent 40 % of the total energy consumption in the EU and 80 % of this energy consumed in buildings is for heating, cooling and hot water.
Looking at it from sustainability perspective 36 % of the EU‘s greenhouse gas emissions are from buildings
Space heating is by far the most important individual end-use and it is important in almost every European country
On the other hand space cooling accounts for less of the total energy demand in buildings and is more relevant in Southern countries….but strongly increasing everywhere due to climate change.
Most of the existing buildings use gas boilers which will be likely replaced by the heat pump technology either small scale in individual buildings or large scale in district heating networks.

And these Heat Pumps will incorporate the features in line with the current trends in heating and cooling such as being a renewable energy source, systematic energy efficiency with heat recovery and demand side flexibility, electrification and digitalization at the end user level.

The common feature of HFO refrigerants is their lower global warming potential vs previously used HFC refrigerants that contributes towards lower carbon emissions.

Using HFO systems mean also high level of safety with no or mild-flammability characteristics that brings piece of mind to end users who benefit from a safer indoor environment, as well as building contractors who benefit from lower maintenance, insurance and logistics costs.

An important factor is to achieve a low TCO with less number of units installed as well as higher system efficiency that reduce the building’s energy consumption which lowers the payback period of replacing the environmentally benign fossil fuel boilers.

The last but not least is the compliance to regulations which is achieved by replacing boilers with Heat Pumps as well as lowering the GWP of heating/cooling systems using Solstice HFO refrigerants having zero ozone depleting potential and a short atmospheric life.

The presentation will also give examples of HFO use in commercial Heat Pumps as well as highlight the impact of refrigerant selection on lower operating costs, lower carbon emissions and lower overall cost compared to traditional gas boiler with a separate cooling system.
