Why are buildings important in terms of sustainability?  

• Buildings represent 40 % of the total energy consumption in the EU and 80 % of this energy consumed in buildings is for heating, cooling and hot water. 
• Looking at it from sustainability perspective 36 % of the EU‘s greenhouse gas emissions are from buildings
• Space heating is by far the most important individual end-use and it is important in almost every European country
• On the other hand space cooling accounts for less of the total energy demand in buildings and is more relevant in Southern countries….but strongly increasing everywhere due to climate change.
