Description

The COVID-19 pandemic and acceleration of eCommerce have made mobile refrigeration systems or TRU (Transport Refrigeration Units) an essential part of Cold Chain logistics and “Last-Kilometer” deliveries of vaccines and perishable goods. As trucks and delivery vans are increasingly electrified, the demand for electric mobile refrigeration systems is accelerating dramatically. Today, electric mobile refrigeration systems come in variety of cooling capacity and features. Large systems are used to keep goods fresh or frozen in cargo containers for long-haul transport trucks. Variety of small units for bicycle containers and recreational outdoor portable refrigerators are emerging as well.

For mobile refrigeration applications, utilizing variable-speed compressors provides not only superior energy-efficiency, but also aids more precise temperature-controls than traditional “on/off” fixed-speed compressors. Unlike fixed-speed compressors, constant and real-time activation and acceleration of compressor help electric mobile refrigeration systems to operate at optimized level continuously for a number of pull-downs of cargo containers during deliveries of goods.

Masterflux by Tecumseh has designed and developed a suite of DC-powered variable-speed compressors over two decades for complex needs of transport refrigeration mentioned above. Unlike traditional air conditioning compressors for automotive, which are scroll compressors, Masterflux compressors are rotary compressors which are hermetically sealed. Additionally, utilizing Masterflux compressors in electric mobile refrigeration systems would provide direct DC-DC architecture and could eliminate the need of inverters and other power losses. As a result, the system is lighter and simplified compared to utilizing traditional compressors. Due to its ‘no-leak’ structure of potentially harmful chemicals, combined with its highly shock- and vibration- resistant nature of rotary compressors, there is no surprise Masterflux rotary compressors have been increasingly deployed by transport refrigeration OEMs.

In addition to compressors, Masterflux by Tecumseh also designs a variety of eMRUs (electric Mobile Refrigeration Units), that are optimized for a wide range of applications from portable containers to transport cargo. The Masterflux eMRU system uses eco-friendly Low-GWP refrigerants and offers Plug & Play solutions for easy & quick install.

Come to learn how you can deploy Masterflux-based electric refrigeration systems for your next mobile transport projects.
