
High efficient heat exchangers for refrigeration & heat pump applications
Semi-welded plate heat exchangers (SWPHE) deliver high thermal performance for industrial refrigeration, supporting various refrigerants and high pressures. Alfa Laval’s designs enable efficient use in chillers, heat pumps, and cascade systems. Examples and optimization methods are presented.

Semi-welded plate heat exchangers (SWPHE) have since more than 30 years been successfully used in industrial refrigeration plants. As the demand for high performance, high COP systems increases, the advantages of SWPHEs over traditional heat exchangers such as shell & tube heat exchangers becomes more important as the plate heat exchangers delivers a considerable higher thermal performance.
The main application for SWPHEs in the refrigeration industry has been as flooded evaporator in Chiller applications. However, due to advancements in designs made by Alfa Laval, SWPHEs are now in widespread use also as high pressure heat pump condensers and cascade heat exchangers, condensing R-744 and evaporating R-717 or another refrigerant, with design pressures up to 63bar.
