Low-GWP Refrigerant R-485A: Expanding R-744’s Operating Envelope
This presentation highlights R‑485A, a refrigerant blend with non‑PFAS components and low GWP (<150). It is non‑flammable for practical handling and offers superior efficiency and lower pressure than CO₂, significantly extending operation into warmer climates.

Session description
The global phasedown of high GWP refrigerants and uncertainty around potential PFAS regulations are driving demand for environmentally friendly HVAC&R solutions. While R-744 (CO₂) offers low GWP and is used in some refrigeration systems, its low critical temperature and high operating pressure affect its performance and reliability, especially in mild and warm climates.
R-485A is a next-generation refrigerant blend composed of R-744, R-1132a, and R-32 in a 69/10/21 mass ratio. With a GWP of 142 and components considered non-PFAS under current ECHA definition, R-485A offers a pathway to address some of the limitations of current R-744 systems.
This presentation will review R-485A’s safety, regulatory, and performance for commercial refrigeration applications. R-485A ...
