Description

With the rising adaptation of digitalization and increasing popularity of artificial intelligence, it is crucial to understand the role of refrigerants in cooling equipment.

In this session, Honeywell will present the main challenges related to data center cooling and how HFO refrigerants can address these challenges with the specific focus on energy efficiency, safety and sustainability.

Equipment manufacturers, data center consultants, and contractors will gain valuable information and insights about the latest developments in refrigerant technology for this industry.

Cooling and air conditioning solutions play a critical role in ensuring the stability, performance and longevity of critical systems in Data Centers, so maintaining controlled temperature and humidity is crucial to guarantee them. Inadequate cooling can cause overheating, which can lead to failures, service interruptions, and component damage.

On the other hand, it is essential to select high-efficiency equipment that minimizes energy consumption and carbon emissions, contributing to long-term sustainability. An efficient and reliable cooling solution is essential to optimize data center operations and reduce operating costs.

The data centers of the future have an environmental responsibility and must integrate decarbonization from the early design phases. The selection of equipment must be responsible and always seek a solution that contributes to the objective of decarbonization. To achieve this, it is necessary to reach the following milestones:

• Achieve high energy efficiency (PUE, Power Usage Effectiveness) in cooling systems, minimizing electricity consumption and, therefore, carbon emissions
• Intelligent use of energy and heat (heat recovery, freecooling)
• Use of refrigerants with low global warming potential (GWP)
• Keep continuous operation with the safest indoor environment

HFO refrigerants can provide solutions to these requirements in different cooling equipment technologies such as scroll, screw, oil-free and centrifugal chillers as well as close control A/C units and packaged cooling systems.

The presentation will give examples of HFO use in data center as well as highlight the impact of refrigerant selection on lower operating costs, lower carbon emissions and lower overall cost throughout the lifecycle of a datacentre.
Additional focus will be put on refrigerant related safety topics, which is the highest priority for data center designers and contractors.
