Sustainability maximization of self-contained cabinets thanks to high efficiency components and adaptive control

The general adoption of the R-290 on the self-contained equipment will practically nullify the direct CO₂ emission (GWP=0,02) focusing all the efforts on the indirect emission due to the energy use.

Variable speed technology (VCC) provides relevant energy saving vs on-off compressors, by modulating the compressor's cooling capacity according to the heat load; however, part of the advantages are eroded by other energy-using components (fans, lights, heater...) and further improvements on the VCC COP and speed extension are transferred to the cabinets with an asymptotic trend of its energy consumption.

The case study here presented highlights the results of the Embraco solution aiming to improve the above situation: it shows the energy-saving maximization obtained on a cabinet for retail by replacing the on-off compressor, fan motors, and controller originally installed with the Embraco VCC compressor, Embraco Air multispeed fan motor, and Embraco Sync controller (which allows for a synchronized management of all the consuming elements) and that forms the Embraco Ecosystem proposal.

Both versions have been tested according to the EN 23593. The cabinet with the Embraco VCC compressor, fan motors, and synchronized control of the whole system (including defrost, anti-sweat glass, and door heaters – all switched on only when necessary, on the base of parameters detected by the controller) reached a relevant energy saving and a better temperature stabilization of the preserved food.

The energy saving obtained in the test room is expected to further improve in the field due to the real operative conditions (intense open/close of the cabinet doors, day/night, and seasonal cycles).

This case study, considering the scale of the self-contained cabinets, evidences that the Embraco solutions can contribute to the EU Green Deal targets.
