Driving a Circular Economy Through Reclaimed Refrigerants

Presentation will underline the important role reclamation of refrigerants plays in climate mitigation and is a perfect example of circularity to support the objectives of the Green Deal while offering a solution to the mandatory decrease in virgin product and the increase in importance of cooling.

Description

The presentation of A-Gas will focus on the importance of reclamation of refrigerants which translates the principles of the circular economy and the Green Deal to the refrigerants sector. Many legacy refrigerants are potent greenhouse gases and can severely impact our climate in case these are not managed properly. It is therefore of the utmost importance that these refrigerants undergo proper lifecycle management in order to prevent their release into the atmosphere. The recovery and reclamation of gases is a key pillar of Lifecycle Refrigerant Management (LRM) and is at the core of the A-Gas business strategy. It is clear that reducing leakage and recovering existing refrigerants for future re-use, or destruction, has a far greater positive impact on our climate than the substitution of lower global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants alone. Since reclaimed refrigerants do not fall within the quota system, these also have an important role to play in the maintenance and servicing of existing equipment. Although the importance and added value of applying circularity to the refrigerants sector is well established, the actual recovered and reclaimed volumes of refrigerants remain very low especially in comparison to the collection and recycling rates in other sectors. The presentation will analyse in more detail what the hurdles are for increasing reclamation and what can be done to overcome these. This part will touch on the current and future legislative framework within which the sector has to operate as well as the consequences of illegal refrigerants which are being placed on the market and which undermine the overall objectives of the EU F-gas Regulation. We will also cover the tools and services that make refrigerant recovery easier and quicken the process to get access to these gases.  ... read more
