
Review on crack size distribution in refrigeration circuits, deduced leak rates and consequences for air-side releases
Safe deployment of R290 in heat pumps requires realistic leak assumptions. This work reviews crack size databases, deduces leak rates, and presents release testing experiences at Fraunhofer ISE on numerous prototypes. Implications for reliable test protocol development are outlined.

The safe deployment of flammable refrigerants such as R290 in heat pumps requires realistic assumptions about potential leak scenarios. A critical input parameter for air-side release testing and safe distance determination is the leak rate, which is directly governed by the crack size occurring in the refrigeration circuit.
