Session description
This briefing by Philippe Rivière (European Commission) explains how the EU regulates the energy and environmental performance of products.
Two complementary tools. Energy labelling is the visible side: the A-to-G coloured scale. Ecodesign is the invisible side: minimum requirements that ban the worst-performing products from the EU market.
How it grew. Product rules began one at a time: boilers (1992), fridges (1996), lighting (2000). From 2005, framework legislation replaced that slow approach, and more than 30 measures have since been adopted, supported by a shared methodology (MEErP) and a well-established implementation process.
