Key top-line messages on ENER Lot 21 - Lot 10 - Lot 1

EPEE is addressing three critical product lots under Ecodesign: Lot 1 (space heaters), Lot 10 (split air conditioners), and Lot 21 (VRF systems and chillers). Each lot plays a key role in supporting EU energy efficiency and decarbonization goals, with a focus on regulatory updates and Heat Pump promotion.

Description

EPEE is actively involved in addressing three critical product lots under the Ecodesign Directive: Lot 1, Lot 10, and Lot 21. These lots cover a wide range of heating and cooling products, each of which is crucial in supporting the EU’s energy efficiency and decarbonization goals.
Lot 1 pertains to space heaters with capacities up to 1MW. EPEE has been a strong advocate for phasing out fossil fuel boilers in this category, aligning with broader EU goals to reduce carbon emissions. The organization has continuously pushed for stricter efficiency requirements under this lot, including a proposed 115% requirement, which would drive the market towards cleaner technologies such as heat pumps. However, this advocacy has encountered resistance from some EU Member States, complicating the negotiations on stricter efficiency targets. Despite these challenges, EPEE remains committed to pushing forward with a focus on sustainable heating solutions.
Lot 10 covers split air conditioners below 12 kW. EPEE has closely monitored the revision process and is engaged in consultations regarding the Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for these products. EPEE advocates for maintaining high efficiency standards while accounting for the challenges posed by the transition to alternative refrigerants due to the EU's new F-gas regulations. With new refrigerants potentially impacting the energy performance of air conditioners, EPEE emphasizes the importance of balancing environmental objectives with performance considerations. The organization is also working to ensure that energy labels for these products provide meaningful information for consumers while supporting the overall goal of reducing energy consumption.
Lot 21 focuses on VRF systems, chillers, process chillers, and fan coils, with heating capacities up to 1MW and cooling capacities up to 2MW. This lot has a significant impact on the commercial and industrial sectors. EPEE has been deeply involved in the ongoing revision of this lot, particularly advocating for practical and achievable MEPS levels. The organization is also focused on ensuring that regulations for these products account for the specific needs of professional applications, where energy labels may not be as effective or useful as they are for residential products.
Across these three lots, EPEE's primary focus is on promoting the use of energy-efficient technologies, particularly heat pumps, while navigating the challenges posed by the transition to alternative refrigerants and the increasing complexity of the regulatory landscape. By advocating for industry alignment, collaboration, and the thoughtful application of regulations like energy labeling, EPEE is helping to steer the EU’s heating and cooling sector towards a more sustainable and efficient future.
