The refrigerants business is a key part of the 200-year innovation heritage at Chemours™. The business invented the original fluorochemicals over 85 years ago. Since then, it has demonstrated continual leadership and commitment to the refrigerants industry, transitioning from original fluoroproducts to new non-ozone-depleting innovative solutions with low global warming potential (GWP).
It offers a wide range of refrigerant solutions for an evolving industry. Opteon™ low GWP refrigerants are used in many applications including stationary, mobile air conditioning, transport, industrial refrigeration. To help customers meet stringent regulatory requirements, Chemours™ has developed Opteon™ XL very low GWP refrigerants for an optimum balance of properties, safety and sustainability and offers also low GWP products for foam blowing agents and Specialty Fluids.
Opteon™ XL blends are mildly flammable with very low GWP for new equipment designs in stationary applications allowing to decrease CO2-equivalents to lowest levels. Offering similar performance compared to current HFC technologies they are designed to replace, makes them easier and cost-effective to apply in new equipment without major modifications. Classified as lower flammability (A2L), they allow higher charge sizes than other flammable refrigerants, especially hydrocarbons, and can be safely used by following the applicable codes and standards.
Opteon™ XL20 (R-454C) and XL40 (R-454A) low-GWP replacements can substitute R-404A and R-22/R-407C in many applications. Opteon™ XL40 offers a GWP of 238 and superior performance in cooling capacity and efficiency. It enables a reduction in CO2-equivalents of 94% compared to R-404A. Opteon™ XL20 is a closer match to R-22/R-407C-based technology and is also a valid solution for R-404A equipment. With a GWP 148, it falls under the important maximum value of 150 in the F-Gas regulation and Ecodesign. The very low GWP combined with the improved energy efficiency result in consistently lower emissions than alternative technologies.
Opteon™ XL41 (R-454B) and XL55 (R-452B) are excellent replacements for R-410A in new and existing equipment. XL41 provides the lowest GWP available (466) of all near-drop-in solutions with a reduction of 78% compared to R-410A. It is also a very close match to R-410A and in some cases even provides superior performance in capacity and efficiency. XL55 offers improved performance compared to R-410A while maintaining design compatibility. It also has the lowest flammability compared to other industry-tested R-410A alternatives.
Opteon™ XP blends, solutions for stationary and transport refrigeration. They have been successfully adopted in the refrigeration industry, offer significantly lower GWPs than the legacy HFCs and are classified as A1 (low toxicity, non-flammable). They are ideally suited to replace the current high-GWP products in new and existing equipment (retrofit) to reduce the CO2-equivalent demand under F-Gas regulation (EU) 517/2014.
Opteon™ XP40 (R-449A), non-flammable (A1) replacement for R-404A refrigerant is approved by major equipment manufacturers and broadly adopted, particularly in the EU as the R-404A/R-507 replacement of choice. XP40 provides 67% reduction in GWP over R-404A, system energy efficiency up to 12% and an excellent direct replacement option for a more sustainable retrofit solution for supermarkets.
