How AC and heat pump can contribute to buildings decarbonation and reach European targets in compliance with F-Gas III?

To reach building and residential carbon neutrality, and to reduce dependancy to fossil energy, several actions have been implemented by the European Union. Climalife will do a overview of all solutions avalaible on the market to meet the many challenges.

To reach building and residential carbon neutrality, and to reduce dependancy to fossil energy, several actions have been implemented by the European Union:
- The aim of 30 millions heat pumps must be reached by 2030 according to the REPowerEU plan,
- EPBD directive and the creation of a carbon-neutral building stock by 2050,
- Directive (EU) 2018/2021 on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources, and sets a target for its share in the energy mix in 2030,
- European regulation (EU) 2024/ 573, known as "F-Gas III", related to fluorinated greenhouse gases to reduce carbon footprint

Several technologies are available on the market for AC and Heat Pump systems. Very low GWP molecules (HFOs, HCs) make it possible to improve the energy efficiency of domestic hot water, heating and cooling systems compared with traditional systems (gas or oil-fired boilers). To be in compliance with the new F-Gas III regulation, manufacturers are adapting their equipment accordingly, using refrigerants such as R-1234ze, R-454B, R-454C, R-455A or R-290.
For hydronic systems, there are also bio-sourced alternative heat transfer solutions to traditional glycols that reduce the direct environmental impact, by emitting fewer greenhouse gas emissions and reducing consumption of non-renewable energy, and indirectly by reducing electricity consumption through improved energy efficiency. These decarbonising solutions also have the advantages of reducing investment and operating costs (CAPEX / OPEX) bringing both environmental and economical savings. Climalife will do a overview of all solutions avalaible on the market to meet the many challenges.
