Just a few years ago, there was a clear distinction between commercial and industrial refrigeration technology. Due to increasingly stringent environmental regulations and a growing demand for energy-efficient systems, ammonia (NH3) is increasingly finding a place as a refrigerant in the field of semi-industrial refrigeration technology. Due to its low global warming potential and relatively high enthalpy of vaporization, ammonia has become indispensable in many applications and represents a future-proof solution. To switch to natural refrigerants, skid manufacturers and contractors need components that simplify handling and implementation due to their low complexity. A multipack application is used as an example to show how semi-hermetic compressors can simplify the switch to natural refrigerants in various applications. The advantages and disadvantages of a semi-hermetic solution compared to an open installation will be discussed, and the efficiency potential of a semi-hermetic compressor with roots in the industrial technology will be demonstrated. It will be seen that the benefits depend on the application and operation conditions. Therefor data center cooling will be used to show benefits of a semi-hermetic solution with ammonia on a concrete application example. During the presentation the new semi-hermetic portfolio of GEA called X series is shown.
