New innovative refrigeration oils for hydrocarbon refrigerants, e.g. R-290, R-600a application examples and experience

The presentation introduces new innovative refrigeration oils based on selected polar base oils. The special properties of these new refrigeration oils in terms of miscibility, solubility, dilution and mixed friction behaviour with hydrocarbon (HC) refrigerants will be demonstrated and discussed.

Hydrocarbon refrigerants as natural refrigerants are becoming increasingly more significance. In terms of environmental impact, they have significant advantages over fluorinated refrigerants. Typical representative such as R-290, R-1270, R-600a have a high thermal resistance are chemically stable and show good material compatibility. However, the main advantage is the very low global warming potential (GWP) of 3 to 6. Hydrocarbon refrigerants show good miscibility with conventional refrigeration oil types. Homogeneous mixtures are formed over a wide temperature range with both mineral oil and synthetic lubricants such as PAO or polyol esters.
The solubility of hydrocarbons in mineral oils and other conventional refrigeration oils is relatively high, which leads to a strong dilution and thus a strong reduction in the viscosity of the oil refrigerant
mixture. This can be causing wear problems. Special polar refrigeration oils based on selected polyalkylene glycols have a defined and controlled miscibility with the hydrocarbon refrigerant.
Defined additive systems avoid uncontrolled foaming of the dissolved hydrocarbons in the oil. Special developed anti-wear extreme pressure additives avoid wear in the compressor, in bearings, pistons, and valves. The presentation introduces the latest developed polar refrigeration oils, which have been developed for use in hydrocarbon refrigerants. It shows differences to conventional refrigeration oils with regard solubility and miscibility behaviour. The influence of the refrigeration oil to compressor components will be discussed.
