Beschreibung

Low charge system design is a global trend in refrigeration to reduce environmental impact of green-house effect refrigerants in one hand, and in the other hand to increase system safety when using flammable or toxic natural refrigerants, such as R-290 or R-717. Thus, low charge R-717 systems are the solution to popularise this natural refrigerant in medium capacity installations from industrial to commercial refrigeration. Over the past two years the Ammolite project developed by Intarcon has carried out in-depth research on the application of low charge technologies to the design and construction of compact air-cooled refrigeration chillers.
As a first application we have engineered a series of glycol chillers in the range from 250 kW to 700 kW. The Ammolite chillers features a specific ammonia charge of just 70 gr per kW of cooling capacity, contrary to a conventional pumped R-717 system with a typical specific charge of 4 to 5 kg/kW. These ammolite chillers were introduced in the past Chillventa event that was held on-line. Further evidence about system performance from recent instalaltions will be shown in this presentation. The Ammolite glycol chillers in an indirect system are then a convenient solution for positive temperature refrigeration. Furthermore, this low charge R-717 technology has been successfully applied to low temperature direct expansion systems, down to -35ºC evaporating temperature, for cold rooms and blast freezing tunnels.
The use of critically charged systems, semihermetic screw compressors, miscible oil, dry expansion evaporators with thermostatic expansion valves, microchannel condensers, direct oil cooling, hot glycol defrost, etc. is the basis for the low charge ammonia technology used in the Ammolite range. The presentation will cover these technical aspects of the low charge R-717 technology and will illustrate its performance through selected success cases.
