Koura’s Next Generation Refrigerants - Enabling the Industry to Meet Future HFC Phasedowns

Koura will present an overview of their next generation refrigerant portfolio that will increase overall sustainability while achieving the F-gas Regulation timetable. The focus will be on how Koura can help meet the market need of lower global warming potential and/or increased energy efficiency.

Beschreibung

The European Union F-Gas Regulation and the Kigali amendment to the Montreal Protocol comprise cap and phase-down mechanisms to drive replacement of today’s HFC refrigerants with alternatives having lower Global Warming Potential (GWP).
Koura is developing a suite of low GWP refrigerants to meet this market need. 3 refrigerants will be reviewed:
R-456A – R-134a replacement with equivalent performance and 50 % lower GWP
R-473A – R-23/R-508 replacement with equivalent performance and 90 % lower GWP
R-468C – R-410A replacement with similar performance and 85 % lower GWP
Two of these products are commercially available now, R-456A and R-473A. R-456A is a R-134a replacement with equivalent performance and 50 % lower GWP. This refrigerant is gaining interest in the automotive aftermarket, especially given the next HFC stepwise phasedown upcoming in 2024.
The other new product is R-473A which is a R-23 and R-508B replacement with equivalent performance and 90 % lower GWP. The ultra-cold temperature market is very interested in this refrigerant since the GWP of R-23 and R-508B are 14,800 and 13,396, respectively.
Looking forward, the stationary sector will be particularly challenged since the dominant refrigerant is R-410A, with a GWP of 2088. Although this is being replaced in smaller unitary systems with R-32 (GWP 675) in Japan and the EU, its use is still growing in other regions of the world. Koura has developed R-468C as a lower GWP fluid that can retain the performance benefits of R-410A or R-32. R-468C properties are close to those of R-410A, with critical temperature slightly higher and with predicted temperature glides in evaporator and condenser in the 4-5 K range.
