Industrial Heat Pump Applications in Japan
For significant reduction of greenhouse gas reduction, it is important to lower carbonization of electricity, to electrify heat usage, and to use electricity with high efficiency. The industrial sector has much potential for electrifying heat usage and for reducing greenhouse gas reduction.
In recent years, various types of heat pumps that generate high temperature water, steam and hot air have been developed in Japan. The heat pumps are expected to be introduced in industrial heating processes in order to achieve energy saving as well as greenhouse gas emissions reduction. On the other hand, unlike application for space heating and hot water supply in building sector, it is not easy to apply heat pumps to industrial heating process because of lack of information on heating demand and special characteristics of each heating process. For the purpose of organizing information for spreading industrial heat pumps, 84 examples of installation case were collected and the good practices were analyzed.
Breaking down by industry, the installation case in food industry is the most. They are applied for various purposes; hot water supply for washing or sterilization, hot air supply for drying and steam supply for distillation or condensation. From the view point of energy-saving effect, reduction of heat load by installing heat pump near heating process is the first and most important. In addition, application of simultaneous heating and cooling or waste heat recovery has a good effect.
The presentation covers the installation target of industrial heat pumps by the Japanese Government, the installation situation of industrial heat pumps in Japan, and the key points of industrial heat pump applications including examples of good installation cases.
