Milmet – the present name of the company derives from its long history dating back to the year 1882 when the “B. Hantke Metal Plants Trust” set up a small metal rolling mill in Milowice near Sosnowiec. Although the production line of the mill became increasingly wider, the company always produced more or less complex metal products.
A new chapter in the history of Milmet opened with the production of steel cylinders for technical gases in 1925. It involved the most advanced and unique technology known at that time. Even today, almost a century later, Milmet remains the only producer of steel cylinders for technical gases in Poland. Soon afterwards the company changed its name into “Huta Milowice” (Milowice Steelworks) which for many decades became a symbol of high quality and tradition.
In the postwar period the company started to produce brass valves for steel cylinders, welded cylinders for propane-butane and finally in 1981 rolling bearings. In 1992 Milmet was transformed from a state company into a state-owned joint stock company. With the outset of the age of high specialization in industry the company decided to look for strategic partners for two of its production departments. The rolling bearing department was sold to the American concern Timken in 1996 and in 2001 the Swedish company GCE bought the valve department. As a result of mass privatization program in Poland the Milmet company was quoted on Warsaw Stock Exchange since 1998 and in 2000 the important shareholder was Vitkovice Holding from Ostrava. After further increase of the company ownership Vitkovice Holding announced the buy-out of the rest of the shares from Warsaw Stock Exchange and has been the owner of company since 2006.
Nowadays the company is called Vitkovice Milmet and it produces two types of cylinders: high pressure cylinders and welded cylinders. Milmet possesses ISO 9001/2008 Quality Certificates issued by TÜV SÜD as well as other relevant approvals to sell all its products in the markets of the European Union, Africa, America and Asia. Nowadays it exports about 80% of its production.
