EC-Fans for Cooling Towers Tailor-made corrosion protection for highest reliability
Cooling Towers are playing an important role in many cooling applications. Depending on location, work load, water temperature, … a cooling tower can be the most economic and efficient solution. And that, regardless of the fact cooling towers are usually equipped with AC-Fans with outdated aerodynamics. While at dry-, adiabatic- and hybrid coolers the technological progress is fully implemented, EC-Fans are used in cooling towers still only in a few cases. Right here the advantages in respect of efficiency, controllability, monitoring, availability, … would show a significant benefit. The question is, why does the Cooling Tower market move slower than other markets? One of the main reasons is the harsh environmental conditions. 100% humidity, a high temperatures and the water treatment require a very robust design. In the early days EC-Fans with external electronics were used in non-critical environments like clean rooms, IT-applications, … . But since then, EC-technology has evolved and moved into many different applications. Nowadays, EC-Fans with integrated electronics are state of the art. Appropriate measures enable the fans to be used outdoors in many different climatic areas. And the story continues. The next logical step is the usage of EC-Fans in Cooling Towers. Tailor-made corrosion protection measures can enable EC-Fans to be used in Cooling Towers. This requires great experience in the design and operation of EC-Fans and a test setup covering the real operating conditions. Besides the corrosion protection, the presentation does look at the advantages of EC-Fans for this application and shows some concrete retrofit projects demonstrating the energy saving potential of EC-Fans in Cooling Towers.
