Creard R-407H - Latest development of an easy, lower GWP service replacement for R-404A
In collaboration with the German Gas-distributor Westfalen AG, DAIKIN Chemical contacted the Supermarket chain Klaas + Kock (K+K). K+K is a regionally focused company, in the northwestern part of Germany. They run more than 200 supermarkets and in most of their commercial refrigeration applications use the high GWP refrigerant R-404A. The Requirement: A solution for a traditionally designed, mid-size K+K supermarket in Epe, with several cold-rooms, refrigerated showcases and low temperature reach in cases. The technical infrastructure (including the Refrigeration system) was originally installed in 1997. The Refrigeration system is a standard design supermarket R-404A LT & MT Multipack system. The EU F-Gas Regulation and the phase down increased the maintenance cost for the market dramatically in 2017. Therefore, the technically experienced Service Team of K+K decided to look for an alternative refrigerant. One that would be a cost-effective solution for R-404A replacement while maintaining the same capacity and requiring minimal equipment changes. The replacement: The replacement of R-404A to R-407H, both in the low temperature and medium temperature application was completed over the course of two days. The only physical modification was the replacement of the TXV’s on the display cases, which were replaced with electronic expansion valves. The supermarket remained open to customers during the conversion. After three months of operation with R-407H, the measured energy efficiency of the system was observed to be a 6% improvement as compared to the R-404A system, and the capacity remained the same. The best Solution: The K+K project demonstrated an easy to implement replacement in standard commercial refrigeration applications. Creard R-407H offers a cost-effective alternative to the market. It is based on traditional R-407 series HFC chemistry and is thus well known to compatible with traditional elastomers, gaskets and lubricant oils. And, R-407H is able to achieve exceptional cycle performance and GWP without the use of costlier to manufacture HFO components, or any hydrocarbon or CO2 components which contribute to higher pressures and glide.
