The process developed by COLDWAY is based on a simple principle: producing cold and heat instantaneously, independently and powerfully based on an elementary chemical reaction between ammonia and salts contained in a reactor and an evaporator. The COLDWAY thermochemical system consists of three elements - a reactor containing the reactive material (salts and graphite), an evaporator containing liquid ammonia and a communicating valve between both reservoirs. When the valve is opened, the ammonia vaporises inside the evaporator and generates cold, while the gas is absorbed by the salts inside the reactor, releasing heat. This immediate production of cold and heat may have a range of between -30°C and more than 200°C. Hence, heat and cold may be produced at anytime and anywhere, without any connection being necessary. This production progresses without any noise or vibration. The reactive elements - ammonia, salts and graphite - are perfectly confined within a hermetic circuit sealed at the factory, requiring no filling.
Once the ammonia is completely evaporated, production of heat and cold ceases and the system can be recharged by supplying heat from outside (by electrical or solar energy, process heat recovery...) which causes the ammonia to condense. Once regenerated, the thermochemical system stores the energy and is ready for use again. The cycle is infinitely reversible, as proven by the tests conducted by Coldway, during which several thousands of production and recharging cycles were performed.

Two affiliated researchers from a french CNRS unit, Francis Kindbeiter and Laurent Rigaud developed and industrialized an innovative technology , the thermochemical process based on solid-gas absorption and founded COLDWAY in 2001.
